What does a career coach do?

Career coaching, like counselling, is a relatively new profession. Most individuals encounter career coaching only if they have seen a career adviser at school or university or when referred to a coach, often due to circumstances like redundancy. However, we do a lot more than helping people with their CVs and applying for work.

The development of the career coaching profession has come into its own as the uncertainty of work has continued to impact on today's workers. Unlike 20 years ago, it is now almost impossible to reliably plan or even imagine being on a trajectory that will lead to a peak experience, status, or income.

Here is feedback from someone who worked with one of our coaches recently after her job was made redundant;

I wanted to let you know how helpful [your coach] was to me during a difficult period after being made redundant.

I was unsure what to expect from career coaching, but [your coach] did a great job leading each session without being overbearing. She had a supportive and empathetic approach and also provided me with a lot of valuable insights. She was great at collaborating with, and with her guidance and advice, each hour flew by. My sessions with [your coach] have been fundamental to moving into a more positive headspace……..

Career coaching helps people manage the impacts of change and the pressures of today’s rapidly changing world when the pressures are more challenging than ever.

We all deviate from our path at times, and sometimes change occurs beyond our control. We need support and wise guidance to regain control of our career journey.

Throughout various stages of our career journey, we encounter pitfalls, traps, and challenges. At times, we may lose our footing, feel a lack of confidence, or simply become disoriented. A qualified career coach is trained to support us through these times.

At all stages of the career journey, people need support.

As well as working with people affected by redundancy we also work with people at different stages of the career journey.

For students at college; We help students make a good start, with quality guidance and support to follow their interests, remain open-minded, and be willing to learn. Students are asked to make big decisions at a time of intense personal and social development so they need practical support and encouragement to manage this time and encourage them to follow their interests and what is important to them.

First steps in the world of work; We help students step from academic study or into work after school when they need encouragement and wise counsel. At this stage, it is important to be well-informed and involved in something of real interest which makes this stage worthwhile and satisfying.

Working Adults; We help this biggest group navigate the challenging adult world of work and family responsibilities and the complexity of relationships and balance. Career coaches help people to realign to what is intrinsically important to them, remain true to their values, and balance responsibilities. These things become a juggling act. Coaches help people to navigate change well and realign after an upset.

At all ages and stages on the career journey, professional career coaching offers wise counsel and support to help people through times of change and transition. It is not just about helping people find work – however, it can include that!
